Ernest Cole: Lost and Found
More than 60,000 of Ernest Cole’s 35mm film negatives were inexplicably discovered in a bank vault in Stockholm, Sweden. Most considered these forever lost, especially the thousands of pictures he shot in the U.S. Told through Cole’s own writings, the stories of those closest to him, and the lens of his uncompromising work, the film is a reintroduction of a pivotal Black artist to a new generation and will unravel the mystery of his missing negatives.

De film wordt verteld aan de hand van Cole’s eigen geschriften, de verhalen van zijn dierbaren en de lens van zijn compromisloze werk. Het is een herintroductie van een belangrijke zwarte kunstenaar aan een nieuwe generatie en zal het mysterie van zijn vermiste negatieven ontrafelen.
Ernest Cole, photographe sud-africain, a été le premier à exposer au monde entier les horreurs de l’apartheid. Son livre House of Bondage, publié en 1967 alors qu’il n’avait que 27 ans, l’a conduit à s’exiler à New York et en Europe pour le reste de sa vie, sans jamais retrouver ses repères. Raoul Peck raconte ses errances, ses tourments d’artiste et sa colère au quotidien, face au silence ou la complicité du monde occidental devant les horreurs du régime de l’Apartheid. Il raconte aussi comment, en 2017, 60 000 négatifs de son travail sont découverts dans le coffre d’une banque suédoise.
